French with Madame Larkin
Madeleine's Grandma, Madame Larkin, has been coming into class to help us with our French! We are so lucky to have a native French speaker helping us to pronounce our words correctly. We were playing shop and buying clothes in French!

Our Topic This Term is Changing Materials.
We went to Dynamic Earth on 21st May
We've been carrying out experiments t see what happens when we mix certain materials together. We inflated a balloon with bicarbonate of soda, made slime, and made a synthetic fibre by dropping milk into vinegar!

WE all had a brilliant time and P7 were really brave doing all the daring activities! They supported each other throughout, and pushed themselves to the limit; always prepared to go a little bit further, and try a little bit harder.
They achieved amazing things and we are all very proud of them!

The first day after our arrival we started of with an obstacle course. Very challenging but lots of encouragement made it fun. After our evening meal we had a scrap heap challenge. Keep a water balloon in tact when it gets kicked or thrown in the air. Next morning nature walk , climbing, Jacobs Ladder, laser quest and lots of fun.
WW2 Cookery
We had a busy morning cooking and baking from WW2 recipes. They had some unusual ingredients because of rationing. In the Apricot Flan, the apricots had been replaced by carrots and jam!
The chocolate buns were mostly oats - and the fruit cakes had vinegar in them instead of eggs!
We all liked the soup, which used oatmeal to thicken it, and only had vegetables in it that could be grown locally. Everyone had a job to do, and took turns to wash up.
I think eating the freshly prepared food was probably everyones favourite part.

Our World War II Social Studies Topic
We have an Anderson Shelter in our classroom, so we can be safe when there is an air raid!
We have been learning about Evacuation and how children from cities, such as Glasgow and Edinburgh, were evacuated to the countryside to be safe from the bombing. We drew evacuees, and made identity cards.
Mrs Currie read us a story about The Hoolet in Scots as part of our Burns activities.
Winter Experiments
We came back to school in 2018 to a very snowy January! We have been outdoors collecting snow to see how heavy it is, and discover if it weighs the same when it has melted.
P6/7 Enjoy a Brilliant Feast!
Thankyou to all our parents for providing such a fantastic spread!
On Monday 11th December we had a continental breakfast to celebrate the end of our topic on Europe. We came dressed in clothes to reflect the country we had chosen to research for our project. Can you spot Gemma and Keira L wearing their Dutch outfits? There was a great deal of food, croissants, pain au chocolat, crepes, madeleines, brioch, pretzels, salami, ham, cheeses from The Netherlands and biscuits and crackers from Sweden. We drank hot chocolate and fruit juices. In fact there was so much food we invited P3/4/5 to come and share it. (P1/2 were busy making jam!)
Outdoor Learning in November
We really enjoy doing maths in the playground and the back field. We are learning about Shape, Position and Movement. We worked with a partner, using compasses to follow directions - we found it very tricky!
In maths we have been learning about angles, and we found plenty of different types of angles outside.
We've been helping Mrs Currie in the polytunnel, working hard to harvest the vegetables and prepare the ground for the Winter.

We Had a Visit from Outreach@the Scottish Parliament
Ian from Outreach came into class to help understand the role of the Parliament. We had a debate and voted on issues. Thistle was the Presiding Officer - she was in charge and controlled the debate. It was lots of fun, and it helped us understand how MSP's serve their constituencies.
House Captain Elections
On Thursday, 14th September Newlands Primary School went to the Polls! We all voted for our new House and Vice Captains. All the candidates had to read their manifestos at House Meetings the week before. They were all very nervous.
Zero Waste Week 4th-8th September
We did an assembly to tell everyone about Zero Waste Week and what we were trying to achieve. We weighed food waste in the dinner hall every day, and tried to encourage everyone to eat up their dinner, and not take too much food from Fiona if they didn't like it, or weren't too hungry.
Pat from Whitmuir came and did some cookery with us, to give us ideas about what we can do with left over food..

Visit to the Scottish Parliament Monday 28th August
We all had a great day at the Parliament, and learnt a lot about it's history. We enjoyed looking at the architecture and the lovely designs on the walls and ceilings. We went into an MSP's office and sat in the thinking pod! We learnt that the 4 values of the Parliament are: Justice, Wisdom, Compassion and Integrity.
The weather was warm, so we could eat our lunch outside.

Whitmuir Visit
On Thursday 24/8 we had began our work with Whitmuir to plan Zero Waste Week. Catherine came in to help us understand the 2000m2 project, and how food waste occurs on it's journey to our plate - and how we can help reduce waste at home.
