The Romans have invaded the room! This week we have linked our measuring skills with team work to all create a shield. We worked to cut, cover and paint our shield. Next week is the clearer design part. We are booked to go to Melrose and to see Roman artefacts and walk along a Roman road..
During May, we have spent a lot of term using the outdoors for learning and seeing how the plants have grown from seeds. We are linking this with how humans grow and change.
Work linked with The Romans is underway and we are looking forward to Transition Tuesday with P1/2.

After the Bank Holiday, we had a DYW(developing a young work force)week.
We were really lucky to have lots of parents and local services come to help us.
We now have a clearer idea of the skills need to do certain jobs and what we need to do to achieve this.
We came back on Easter Monday to some fun Easter activities involving egg rolling. Pictures on twitter.
On 25th April, we were lucky to have a fabulous presentation from Action for Children.
We really enjoyed it and will all be aware of taking time for us .

As we are coming to the end of the term, we are looking forward to sharing our learning about forces with parents on Monday. We worked in teams to make games using a circuit and can not wait to test them on the parents.
Also this month we have been lucky to have a visit from the fire service of West Linton who have told us how to keep our houses safe by checking alarms and by helping out in a crisis.
We all enjoyed the practical session and feel better equipped to cope should the situation arise.

As February draws to an end and we have been blessed with lovely weather we have been planting and exploring outdoors. We have a programme in place till the summer which encourages us to look after the soil and germinate seeds in the poly tunnels and then put things outside in our beds.
Preparation is well underway.

February has seen us explore our topic of forces by carrying out experiments linked with air resistance, buoyancy and friction.
We also developed power point slides linked with people who have done things linked with force-like The Wright Brothers and Archimedes.
We also explored the force of art images .
To finish the term, we presented our work to the school.

Happy New Year
January has been about learning about Scottish culture and reading Burns.
We all made a great effort and it was really difficult for the judges to find a winner.
Our forces topic is taking off with the boys construct a rocket.
Power points are nearly ready to present and art work inspired by Litchenstein are also ready for display.

Last week was show week...and what a show!
We sold our enterprise gifts and made over £200.
We performed in both parts of the show as P3 helped P1/2 with Christmas songs and P4 were carol singers with P5.

To finish this week, we shared our boxes with P1/2. It was really good fun.
Now we are in December, we are really busy with our enterprise topic and this week Mrs Revell, who is a local baker and supplies businesses in Biggar, came in to explain how the world of baking ,as a job, works.
She explained how you have to make a profit so you can reinvest into your cooking materials and take a little money for yourself.
We iced and decorated ready made cakes and sold them in school.
We are also lucky that Mrs McCain comes in to help us knit and we have made Christmas robins. These will be for sale at our Christmas Show, along with dipping oils and sweets.
All this hard work will hopefully be worth it but we have really enjoyed our enterprise topic.
Wow! What a greeting this morning.
Our project about our favourite place in Scotland came in today..in a shoebox. Amazing. See for yourself.
We will start talking about them from Wednesday .

This week we have collected money and celebrated the Children in Need cause. We all dressed in our pjs and did our curriculum activities based around Pudsey. We have been looking at the work of Charles Rennie mackintosh and created a class stained glass window display. We used the same technique to create Pudsey. We also took notes from a video on Pudsey and created fact files. In maths we used our co ordinates skills to send Pudsey fund raising.
In the past two weeks we have been looking at times to reflect and think about others.
Last week saw us making celebration plaques for the 100 year anniversary of the end of WW1. The children loved finding out about local soldiers from our corridor display and when the service was held they took part in the appropriate way.

Our focus this term is Enterprise.
Linked to our Scottish produce study last term, we are starting by selling our Tunnocks stash at our Tunnocks Tuckshop with Mrs Duff. When we have the money we will by ingredients to start making our own snacks. We decided on this idea as we will try to make a healthy litter free snack. We start on Thursday 8th November with Highlander Bars. |

Since October holiday we have also been busy in the garden.
We have harvested things to share with others and tidied up our space.. |
The last week of term saw us working with P5 to raise money for MacMillan nurse.
It was a jam packed(literally) afternoon and resulted in us raising £300.

What an exciting week we had this week.
On Tuesday Mrs Adams received a call saying Tunnocks were going to deliver us some produce to sell so we can get our own enterprise idea off the ground.
Well, on Wednesday, Graham turned up with an enormous box of goodies. Not only do we have loads of biscuits to sell but he kindly sent us a pencil, ruler or rubber. We have so much that we are going to put half the stock into our Macmillan Coffee Afternoon.
We have worked out our pricing (20p per item ) and intend to have a Tunnocks tuck day to get the money to start our own biscuit production.. Watch this space.

Last week saw our first open afternoon of the year and it was great to see all the parents. We launched our pupil profiles and encouraged parents to share in the learning activities the children have experienced.
Remember profiles are due back Monday 24th September. Please find time to discuss their learning and write up your comments on the slips provided.

Voting for House Captains
Over the past two weeks we have been introduced to different candidates to do the job of house captain. We went along and cast a vote after listening to our house candidates. It was a very hard decision to make.
We have started our class topic on Scotland and its produce. This is an enterprise topic and we will be selling donated gifts to set up our own biscuit making company.
This week we looked at Tunnock's and have produced fact sheets on what they do and their history. We have also written letters with our partner buddy to ask if they can send us a few samples to sell.
We were amazed at how the production line of teacakes was made and so decided to try to replicate this in class.
We worked at different stations-biscuit, jam filling, marshmallow and finally chocolate. We used different materials - card, tissue paper, crepe paper and finally material to make a teacake.
Finally we covered it in silver paper and decorated.
Next week we will make a box to put it in.

We welcomed a new member to our class this term in Erin. We hope she enjoys her time here at Newlands.
We started the term getting to know each other working in a variety of groups.
We have chosen class jobs and worked out which groups we are in to share our school priorities. The pictures show Ms McKinnon sharing them with us in assembly.
Struan, our teeth monitor ,had a chat with the dental nurse to make sure he does his job correctly.
Outdoor learning is with Mrs Currie on a Wednesday and once again Mrs McCain is helping us on Wednedsay.
PE with Mrs Buxton and Mr Davidson is on a Tuesday and Friday.
Ms Morrow, Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Bruce support our learning on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
