We had an amazing week with superb presentations of our planet family learning tasks and our visit to the Royal Observatory and the Queen's park in Edinburgh.  See photo's below.  Click on the link to see some of the PowerPoint presentations. The P7s have supported the P1/2 with reading comprehension. This week we had our session outside.
P1/2 had a visit from Lee from SSPCA showing how this organisation helps animals all over Scotland from pets to wild animals and farm animals. Outside we used meter sticks to work out how to measure length. Some children got themselves measured in centimetres. On moving up morning the current P1 welcomed the new P1s and made them feel at home in our class.

Jet packs

We made model jet packs in art today using bottles, cups and paper. We enjoyed some imaginative play afterwards, zooming around the classroom.
The transition visits from the nursery children have started. This week the group came to our P1/2 assembly where the pupils entertained and informed the school with songs and role play about the earth, the moon and the sun.
We took the nursery children on a walk round the back playground and showed them where they can play an where not. Then we watered the plants in the poly tunnel and visited the outdoor class room.

Outdoor Classroom Day

Today was Outdoor Classroom Day.
We did maths in the morning. Some groups collected objects, sorted them and made a tally chart with them. We then made bar graphs from the information.

Other groups made Venn diagrams.
We did outdoor art in the afternoon.
We learned about the artist, Kandinsky, and how he 'saw' lines, shapes and colours in his imagination when he heard music. Here are some pictures he painted after listening to music.
We listened to Holst's Planets and painted what was in our imagination. We had more space and could make more mess outside! (We had to use rocks to hold the paper down during windy spells and there were a few raindrops added to the paintings, but that is Outdoor Learning in Scotland!)
Can you guess which paintings show Venus, the bringer of Peace and which show Jupiter, the bringer of Jollity. In other words, which paintings make you feel peaceful and which make you feel happy?

Whipman float

This week in our art lesson we created BIG pictures for the Whipman float.
We chose The Twits as our Roald Dahl story. One group made Mr Twit eating messily. Another group made the lovely Roly-Poly bird. Two groups made the balloons and Mrs Twit floating away. One group made Mugglewump, the monkey, and two boys made plates of wormy spaghetti. There are also beautiful drawings of birds to be added.
We cannot wait for the big day. Have you got your costume ready?

Art

This week we made black and white line drawings of astronauts. We shaded the helmet with a chalk pastel, leaving a small white spot to show reflection of light.
Last week our art lesson involved painting and printing to create texture and perspective.
We made a picture of the Moon as seen from Earth.
First, we mixed white and black paint to make grey then added flour so the paint had a bumpy texture (for the Moon's surface).
Then we dabbed the paint onto a circle we had drawn and cut out.
Then we printed craters with corks.
Finally, we rolled black paint onto the background and sprinkled with glitter to create near and far stars.
Check this space soon to see the finished pictures (when they are dry).

Massage class

We began our weekly massage class on Thursday. Mrs Jamieson will be visiting us every Thursday for the next month to guide us through the different massage strokes. How many can you name already? Do you recognise any in the photos below?
Another short week with lots of activities.
We had Tony from Childline visiting us and helping us to learn what to do when you are feeling sad or upset about something. We made globes from balloons and learned about the 7 continents in our reading, writing and science activities. We used a light to demonstrate how day and night works when the earth is turning. As a surprise Pauline from Tesco came  back to hand out the prize for the best decorated Easter egg to Tyler.  Finally P1/2 started their HWB activity with massage skills being taught to help us being relaxed and confident within our bodies while learning.
In this short week P1/2 were learning to write number words outside in the playground, sowing seeds to grow flowers in the polytunnels and using hands and feet to create some personal art.
We started our topic with lots of questions on planet earth and created a blog. Click here to go to the blog.
Our fantastic Transport Models

Farmhouse breakfast

Finally, the day has arrived!!
We had a lovely breakfast today from Jayne and Catherine, the ladies at RHET, helped by our own cook, Fiona.
They arrived early in the morning to prepare.....
Then they served up some tasty cereal, fruit and rolls with sausages or cheese.....
Then Catherine taught us all about dairy farming and Jayne taught us about rearing pigs and growing cereal. We really enjoyed ourselves and learned a lot. Thank you to RHET.
Another busy week for P1/2/. Following the pictures we played maths games to consolidate our learning. We developed our role play in the play area where we also like to do lots of imaginative writing.  In one of our ERIC times we paired up in P1/P2 and shared our reading skills in turn. - If you (P1/2 pupil) can tell me who is missing from the paired reading pictures you can earn some house points -. We acted out Rumpelstiltskin to help us with our writing, had a visit from Tesco to remind us of healthy food choices and did some tasting at the same time. We had time to decorate an Easter egg and colour in a Easter egg completion for Tesco Peebles. Finally we went out to prepare for our growing season.  - it is only Wednesday!  Tomorrow it is RHET Farmhouse Breakfast!

RHET ART COMPETITION PRIZEGIVING

 P. 1/2 were one of  the winners of the RHET Farmhouse Breakfast art competition.
Tilly and Dan went to SBC Headquarters to represent our class.
Here they are receiving the prize (which included a £50 book token for our school) and giving their pretend acceptance speeches. We had a fun morning.
The poster we made is pictured below.

Up, up and away.....

,As part of our Transport topic we made pictures of hot air balloons.
We each made two backgrounds (of a watercolour sky) and two balloons. The balloon on the right is an ink press print and the one on the left is a freehand design with coloured pen.

This week's highlights were learning that -ow and ou can make the same sound. Rumpelstiltskin a story that is inspiring our young writers through role play and video.  Final preparations for the planting season.
P1/2 looked at different ways transport is powered.  Man power, horse power, wind power, electricity and fossil fuels like diesel and petrol.  We talked about pollution and making choices what transport to use. In class we made a paper car and a petrol station and car park for the play area. We are also busy preparing the poly tunnels for the new planting season.

Happy Pancake Tuesday!

Our language work today came from our pancake making activity.
P2 wrote instructions for making pancakes and P1 practised the long 'a' sound in 'cake' and made rhyming words. (We even got the word 'earthquake'!)
Here is our own recipe for pancakes:
Put all these into a bowl:
one cup of flour
Picture
 one cup of milk
Picture
one egg
Picture
a pinch of salt

Mix it all up
Pour some into the pan and cook on one side.
FLIP IT OVER!
Pop on some topping.
Let it cool then roll it up.
ENJOY!
YUM!

Art with Alison!

We had a very special art lesson today with Alison who is a REAL artist. She showed us a her technique for painting watercolour skies.

As part of our outdoor learning experiences and our transport topic RHET organised a visit from an old and a new tractor. P1/2 looked at similarities and differences and had lots of questions to ask. Thank you Lesley Mason, Mary Howe and Andrew Adamson.

Weighing

P.2 weighing with pan balances and using kilograms

BOAT PAINTINGS

We looked at paintings of boats by famous artists and discussed the colours they used and how they made the boats reflect in the water.
After that, we made our own versions.
Here are 3 by famous artists:

Picture
Painting of Star by Raoul Dufy (1933)
Picture
Red boats at Argenteuil by Claude Monet (1875)
Picture
Boats at Royan by Samuel Peploe (1910)  (Scottish artist)

Now, here are ours.....

P1/2 were learning what kind of transport was invented first and put lots of kinds of transport on a timeline. We also used drama to learn about all the different steps you need to go through before getting on a plane.

Art work

Last Thursday was very snowy and we could not resist making a winter picture.
Below are our BIRCH TREES IN THE SNOW.
We tore cold colours of tissue paper to make a collage of the winter sky, then drew birch trees and stuck them on.
We added curved lines to make the trees look 3-D then mixed grey and painted in shadows on the trees and on the snow.

Making models of forms of transport

Our outdoor class room is an excellent place to act out a form of transport such as a motorbike. What the picture where they are fastening their helmets!

Happy New Year!

The new year started of with learning capital letters for the p1 pupils and exploring the play areas that have been changed to support our transport topic.

P1/2 had a very busy last week before the holidays with Golden time,  Christmas lunch, Christmas party and lots of art activitities.
Below is a picture of some of the calendars we made finishing of our Seasons topic in a festive way. Pictures of the whole school activities are on the pupils' news pages.
Making Play dough and write instructions
P1/2 made play dough and afterwards wrote the instructions how they did it.

P1 learned the OO sound and made sentences with our new flash cards.

P.2 Working with right angles

We had to give directions to our partner to help them get out of the maze doing right angle turns.  Tricky!
Picture
P1/2 had a busy week starting with building our wind vanes and weather vehicles.  On Wednesday we shared our favourite books in class and on Thursday we went to the Eastgate to meet author Meg McLaren.  When we checked our rain gauges we found that the water was frozen.

Rainy day art work

Our read-a-licious trip to the Eastgate Theatre was magical!

We met the author, Meg McLaren and her magician friend.
They helped us make magic wands and taught us how to draw the main character of the story, Houdini.
You can see the author and magician in the first photo. The second photo is of Houdini and the third photo is the cover of the book we read.
